Wastewater Treatment Process: An Overview

Wastewater treatment is a process of removing contaminants from wastewater. It is designed to improve the quality of water so it can be reused or safely returned to the environment. Secondary treatment involves the use of biological treatment processes. In this process, specialized bacteria convert organic matter into harmless byproducts. The bacteria use oxygen to break down the organic matter, which is then removed either by sedimentation or filtration. This process also removes nitrogen, phosphorus, and other dissolved solids.

Tertiary treatment is the final stage of wastewater treatment. This process removes nutrients and other pollutants from the water. This is done through a variety of methods such as reverse osmosis, ion exchange, and ultraviolet radiation. These treatment processes ensure that the water is safe to be used for drinking or to be discharged into the environment.
